Project

The Oneclick project began in August 2021 with the goal of creating tools to enable the creation of submission (SIP), archival (AIP), and dissemination (DIP) information packages that conform with the E-ARK standards for digital archiving. In addition to developing new IP creation tools, the Oneclick project led to Archivematica (Piql) and YKSA Archive (DISEC) achieving successful E-ARK compliance, marking a pivotal achievement in the preservation journey.

Furthermore, the newly introduced Oneclick SIP creator tool underwent testing on two collections at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA). The results reaffirm the tools’ effectiveness and adaptability across varying datasets. A comprehensive data migration and preservation plan has been tailored specifically for EKA to ensure a holistic approach. This plan acts as a roadmap, guiding EKA towards sustainable data management practices that safeguard valuable information for the future.

The project revolved around achieving three key milestones:

"sustainable data management practices that safeguard valuable information for the future."
"sustainable data management practices that safeguard valuable information for the future." Created by: stabilityai/stable-diffusion-xl-base-1.0

SIP creation

A SIP refers to a structured collection of digital content and associated metadata that is submitted to an archival repository or system for long-term preservation. SIPs play a crucial role in the archival process, serving as the initial stage where digital materials are organized and prepared for preservation.

The main goal of this project was to automate the SIP creation process by designing, implementing, and testing an input-independent SIP creator solution. This means that creating conformant SIP packages is not reliant on archival know-how or tight integration with existing proprietary systems.

The project did not use an existing SIP creator tool because the few open-source solutions that exist, such as Roda-in, ESSArch, and the earkweb reference implementation, are designed for digital preservation professionals. These solutions require a detailed knowledge of how the packages are created, the nature of the workflow, and the expected format of the metadata. Furthermore, the user interface and vocabulary of these applications can be challenging for non-professional users. Finally, setting up such a system as on-premise installation requires technical skills which smaller organizations often do not have. Oneclick addresses these issues with a simple-to-use one-click solution for creating conformant SIPs.

SIP creation benefits
As a direct result of the Oneclick project
  • Users are no longer limited to existing (complex) SIP creator solutions,
  • Two more repositories are now E-ARK conformant,
  • Selected parts of the Estonian Academy of Arts material have been migrated into E-ARK SIPs (read more here),
  • Oneclick has been tested in the National Archives of Latvia,
  • Preliminary discussions with Dialog City project.

E-ARK conformity achievement

During the project two existing commercial digital repositories were transformed to be E-ARK conformant. These two systems were

Achieving E-ARK conformity for YKSA Archive

After the OneClick project Yksa archive is now able to:

  • Ingests SIPs,
  • Create and store AIPs and
  • Output DIP
Achieving E-ARK conformity for Archievematica (Piql)

Who can benefit: Any organization that wishes to build a digital repository that combines the advantages of:

  • Conformance with E-ARK specifications
  • The Archivematica digital preservation platform

After the OneClick project Archivematica can be used to

  • Transform E-ARK SIPs into Archivematica Transfer SIPs
  • Create E-ARK AIP containing Archivematica AIP
  • Output E-ARK DIPs

These were achvieved by:

  • Using custom Enduro-managed workflow
  • Using Archivematica and open source Enduro plus configuration and scripts
  • Alongside with Engineering and Science Lab project (ESL

Workflow ingests EARK SIP, validates using EARK validator, produces EARK AIP and checks conformance. EARK AIP contains Archivematica AIP as a ‘preservation object’ in representation.

All packages from both updated repositories are fully compatible with the IP specifications and passes validations.
